Warning signs of genocide increasing –UN


As the world remembers the victims of genocide today, the United Nations has called for more attention to be paid to the crime as warning signs are on the rise.
The UN’s Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, made the call in a message on the first-ever International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and the Prevention of this Crime.

Irate APC supporters storm INEC office over poll cancellation


Hundreds of aggrieved supporters of the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday threw Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, into pandemonium as they protested the cancellation of Southern Ijaw poll.
The protesters,  comprising youths, ladies and persons with disabilities, gathered at the party secretariat in Yenagoa, from where they marched to the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission on Swali Road.

US envoy hails Buhari’s anti-corruption war

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, has commended the anti-corruption drive of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying it is a positive sign for Nigeria’s economic future.
The envoy challenged the nation to unite with the US to fight endemic corruption in Nigeria.
Speaking during the commemoration of the 2015 International Anti-Corruption Day on Tuesday in Abuja, Entwistle stated that corruption must be addressed by governments, civil society organisations and the private sector, through “top-down and bottom-up efforts.”
He said, “According to the recent Transparency International report on corruption in Africa, Nigerians were among the most likely to believe that corruption was getting worse in their country.
“President Buhari’s focus on addressing corruption is a positive indication for a secure and bright, economic future for this country. Corruption must be addressed by governments, civil society and the private sector, through both top-down and bottom-up efforts.
“The success of this fight depends on continuing efforts to ensure that citizens everywhere, as individuals, journalists, and as organised civil society, are able to expose corruption and participate in holding their governments accountable.”

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says he does not regret supporting President Muhammadu Buhari during the electioneering, adding that Nigeria would not have survived four more years of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s rule.

EFCC arraigns Dokpesi for laundering N2.1bn, fraud


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday arraigned a former Chairman of DAAR Communications Plc, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, before a Federal High Court in Abuja on six counts of money laundering  and procurement fraud related charges.
Dokpesi who was arraigned along with his firm, Daar Investment and Holdings Ltd, pleaded not guilty to all the six counts.

FG to spend N500bn on social welfare programme to cater to poor Nigerians in 2016

      
President Muhammadu Buhari in a proposal that was contained in the 2016-2018 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper, which he sent to the National Assembly on Tuesday, stated that he is proposing to spend N500bn on a social welfare program that will cater for the needs of youths and other “vulnerable” groups in 2016.
