The crisis rocking Oyo State chapter of National Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) on Wednesday took another dimension as members accused the association’s, chairman, Alhaji Abiodun Jimoh of corrupt practices.
As a result, it was gathered that he (Jimoh), had been relieved of his position because of mismanagement of the funds.
A purported delegation sent by the national body of the association led by the South-West coordinator of the association, Peculiar Aboluwaji to mediate in the crisis between the chairman, other members of the executive council and the association members could not resolve the issue.
Members of the association insisted on their resolve to impeach Jimoh.
The association had in a communique dated January 26, 2017, sent to the regional and national body, informed the authorities of the vote of no confidence passed on the chairman based on alleged embezzlement of association funds.
The communique also accused Jimoh of abuse of office and highlighted the need to reposition the association in the interest of education in the state.
Secretary of NAPTAN in the state, Akinola Olufemi, told journalists that the association was determined to carry on with the decision to impeach the chairman.
He added that the impeachment was in line with the condition given the former chairman when he agreed to refund the N905,000 he was accused of embezzling.
According to him, Jimoh paid back only N150,000 of the amount.
He added that the sum represented money collected by Jimoh from donors and sponsors without reporting to the council.
When contacted, Jimoh said he was in Abuja and unaware that the Tuesday meeting would hold.
He denied mismanaging the association fund or returning any sum to its coffers.
“There is a serious attempt to politicize the association. Politicians have penetrated the association and I have warned of its consequences.
There is no truth in what they are saying. I did not mismanaged or agreed to return any money. I am in Abuja now and I was not informed of any meeting in Ibadan,” he said.
Also, the second national deputy vice chairman of the association, Adeolu Okubanjo, said Jimoh would remain the chairman until the body’s Legal and Dispute Resolution Committee, which he presides over, met.
He added that the South-West coordinator of the association, Peculiar Aboluwaji, who presided over the meeting where Jimoh was removed, had no mandate to adjudicate on such matter because he was not sent by the national body.
