Members of the Katsina State House of Assembly yesterday impeached the
speaker of the House, Aliyu Sabiu Muduru, and replaced him with Abubakar
Yahaya Kusada, member representing Kusada constituency.
The impeachment was announced at the plenary of the assembly shortly after Muduru was impeached during an executive session of the assembly.
The Chief Press Secretary of the House, Abdulrashid Kuraye, who confirmed this yesterday, said the lawmakers were silent on the reason why Muduru was replaced.
According to him, Kusada who was sworn-in as the speaker by the deputy clerk of the house, Yusuf Jibrin, dissolved all but the appropriation committee that is currently compiling the state government’s 2017 budget proposals before the assembly.
It was also learnt that other principal officers of the house were not impeached along with the former speaker.
Kuraye further stated that the impeachment motion was moved by the house leader and chairman of the assembly appropriation committee, Hambali Farouk, who prayed his colleagues to endorse the deputy speaker, Shehu Dalhatu Tafoki, as interim speaker.
The spokesman of the house, Kuraye, also stated that Kusada emerged the new speaker after the members’ deliberation in the closed door session when Muduru had been asked to vacate his position.
When our correspondent visited the assembly yesterday, all the lawmakers were said to have left the house immediately after the sitting. The increased number of security operatives in the assembly was unmistakable although law and order continued to reign in the assembly.
Kuraye however confirmed that the re-enforcement of security personnel was meant to keep the peace in the assembly.
